New Delhi: Now your mobile number is likely to be 11 digits. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made a proposal on Friday. In the proposal, TRAI has suggested using 11-digit mobile numbers in the country. According to TRAI, making the 10-digit mobile number 11-digit would make more numbers available in the country.
Mobile numbers capacity in the country will increase to 1 thousand crore
In its proposal, TRAI said that if the first digit of the mobile number was kept at 9, switching from 10 to 11 digit mobile number would increase the total number of numbers in the country to 10 billion (1000 crore). That is enough for 70 per cent utilization and 700 crore connections with the existing policy, TRAI said.
Number must be preceded by '0' when making a call
TRAI has also suggested putting '0' next to the mobile number when calling from a fixed line. For the time being, for fixed line connection, inter-service area mobile calls need to have '0' at the beginning of the number. However, mobile numbers can be accessed from the landline without initially zeroing in on it. All free sub-levels in Levels 2, 3, 4 and 6 can be used as mobile numbers if Zero is mandatory for making calls to mobiles from fixed networks, TRAI said.
