Bad news for Cigarettes And Pan Masala lovers. Cess on Cigarettes And Pan Masala may be increased at a possible GST Council meeting this month. However, due to the Corona virus, the government is getting very little GST collection. Due to which even earning is not happening. Due to which even the expenses of the government cannot be met.

Cess will rise on Sin Goods

According to media reports, a proposal to increase cess on sin goods could be discussed at the GST Council meeting. States like Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Goa, Delhi have been suggested to increase cess on sin goods in the last few days. Currently there is a cess on sin goods i.e. cigarettes, pan masala and aerated drinks. Also, cess is levied on luxury products like cars.

Cess can increase up to 130 percent

According to the information, 100 per cent cess is levied on Pan Masala, according to the cess rules, the maximum limit for levy is up to 130 per cent. The cess rate on pan masala could be increased by 30 per cent if the council acts in accordance with the rules. Whereas, cess can be levied on aerated drinks at a maximum limit of 15%. That’s 12 percent now.

How much cess can be increased on cigarettes

If you talk about cigarettes, the maximum cess can be levied, which is 290%, of which Rs 4,170 per steak with valerum. At present, all categories of cigarettes cost Rs 4,170 per thousand sticks extra burden. If we talk about cess, then only a maximum of 36 per cent cess is levied. While the GST Council has the option of levying an additional 254 per cent.
