Will the lockdown increase or not? / Government can ask for tightening in 30 containment zones of 12 states, 80% of corona cases in the country are in these areas


The fourth phase of the lockdown is set to be completed on May 31, with many states extending it

 Religious places will open in West Bengal from June 1, though no more than 10 people will be allowed to enter

New Delhi.  A decision on whether the lockdown will continue beyond May 31 in the wake of the Corona epidemic is likely to be made today.  According to news agency sources, the central government is likely to give concessions to the states so that the states can decide the terms of the lockdown in their own way.  However, 30 containment zones in 12 states may be asked to be tightened.  The content zone includes 30 cities in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Orissa.  About 80 per cent of corona cases in the country are in these areas.

 Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday discussed the feedback received from the states with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  Shah had earlier on Thursday spoken to the chief ministers on the phone.  Many states are in favor of increasing the lockdown.  Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said after talks with Amit Shah that the lockdown could be extended to 15 days.

 Possibility of relief to tourism and hospitality industry

 The economies of Puducherry, Kerala, Goa and some states in the North East are heavily dependent on the tourism and hospitality industry.  Many states, including Goa, are demanding that hotels and restaurants be allowed to open.  The government may consider these demands and provide some relief with conditions.

 Karnataka demanded the opening of a religious place

 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said that religious places should be allowed to open in her state from June 1.  Karnataka had also demanded the opening of religious places a few days back.
