The ICMRA said the estimates, based on the National Cancer Registry Program Report, 2020, were based on data from 28 population-based cancer registries. It said that apart from this, 58 hospital-based cancer registries have also provided data.

 The statement said that the number of cancer cases due to tobacco is estimated at 3.7 lakh, which will be 27.1 per cent of the total cancer cases by 2020. The statement said that the incidence of breast cancer in women is estimated to be two lakh (i.e. 14.8 per cent), uterine cancer 0.75 lakh (i.e. 5.4 per cent), and bowel cancer 2.7 lakh (i.e. 19.7) in women and men.
